The sound of running water has a soothing effect, either from a cascading fountain, fish pond or running stream. Such features do not necessarily need to be the focal point of a garden, but can add real interest to a quiet shaded corner or favourite retreat. Careful planning is however required, else what was intended to be a garden feature can easily become a mosquito breeding ground.
